Oats are grown in many parts of the world, mainly in Northwest and Eastern Europe, North America, Canada, Australia and China. It is a crop typical of and well adapted to the cooler climates (Nordic countries, Canada). Nevertheless, high quality oat is also well produced in Australia and New Zealand. Oat is not a bread cereal, but has been a staple food for a long time in Northern Europe.
