German Plant Breeding Conference 2024 “Accelerating Crop Genetic Gain”
The Crop Trust is proud to support a top-class scientific event showcasing the latest developments and innovations in plant breeding for sustainable agriculture.
BOLD, a 10-year project funded by the Norwegian government, aims to tackle the effects of climate change on food and nutrition security by promoting the conservation and use of crop diversity. Managed by the Crop Trust and implemented in partnership with national and international genebanks and plant breeding institutes worldwide, BOLD is continuing efforts to broaden the genetic base of seven key food and forage crops: alfalfa, barley, durum wheat, finger millet, grasspea, potato and rice.
In the conference session "Accelerating crop breeding for improved climate resilience and sustainability," researchers involved in the project will present their achievement and lessons learned from BOLD's pre-breeding efforts:
- Alan Humphries - Introgressing crop wild diversity to improve alfalfa drought tolerance for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan
- Lilian A. Okiro - Evaluation of genetic diversity and genome-wide association studies of resistance to bacterial wilt disease in potato
- Miguel Sanchez-Garcia - New strategies of the Global Barley Breeding Program of the CGIAR to accelerate genetic gains under Climate Change
- Dennis. E. Tippe - Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods and Development (BOLD): Harnessing crop diversity to mitigate the effects of changing climate - Finger Millet component
Following the conference, partners involved in the BOLD pre-breeding and participatory evaluation work will have their annual meeting.
